True reverence cannot be produced by humiliation or force.

Scripture
“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” — Philippians 2:10

Reflection
This verse is sometimes spoken as a prediction that everyone else will eventually be defeated.

Yet the passage begins with Christ emptying Himself, taking the form of a servant, and humbling Himself.

The name before which Christians bow is the name of self-giving love.

To honour Christ’s exaltation while ignoring His humility is to separate His crown from His cross.
