An idol is anything we treat as greater than God—including our own religious pride.

“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” — 1 John 5:21

Reflection
Christians have sometimes described the sacred practices of other peoples as mere idolatry without listening to what those practices mean.

Discernment is necessary, but so is humility.

Money, nationalism, race, power, political ideology, and even one’s own interpretation of religion can become idols.

The first place to confront idolatry is within our own loyalties and desires.
