“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” — Matthew 16:24

Christian identity can become a source of social power, privilege, or superiority.

But Christ describes discipleship as self-denial.

Taking up the cross means relinquishing ego, retaliation, domination, and the need to triumph over others.

In interfaith relationships, discipleship may require bearing misunderstanding patiently while refusing to pass suffering on to another community.
